The Canadian Academy of Multimedia Arts & Sciences (CAMAS) is pleased to
announce the first Canadian-hosted international new media award show; the
Digital Media Awards (DMA). CAMAS was established in 1993 to celebrate and
recognize international industry leaders in the emerging multimedia and
virtual reality industries.
The Digital Media Awards (DMA) show, held in conjunction with
MULTIMEDIA*94 Exposition and Forum, The Four Motors of Europe Conference,
and the Virtual Sensory Technologies Symposium, during Toronto Culture
Technologies Convergence T94 Week (May 22-28, 1994).

The Vision
Multimedia: a new language comprised of sound and images; communication that
stimulates the senses; an industry as vast as the imagination.
We are the Canadian Academy of Multimedia Arts & Sciences, host of the 1994
Digital Media Awards. We recognize and reward excellence.
We believe that electronic literacy is as important as being able to
read; that understanding sparks curiosity.
We will show you the technology behind this new language, and the innovators
behind the technology.
Who Should Enter?
The Digital Media Awards categories celebrate individual, industry and
institutional innovation and advancement in the development of
interactive multimedia technologies. Application areas include:
scientific, artistic, academic/ education, communications, government,
commercial, simulation & training and entertainment.
Judging Criteria:
Judging will be based with the following criteria in mind: innovation,
technical mymerit, intuitive use, practical application (where
applicable), and quality and degree of experience. Judges decisions
are final.
Choosing A Competition Category:
Using the Competition Category descriptions listed, select the format
and category that most closely relates to your production's intent,
primary purpose and target audience. If your choice of category is in
conflict with a subject, thematic, audience, or technical criterion the
entry will be moved into its correct category by the Jury Coordinator.
Categories:
EDUCATIONAL
K-12 application; higher learning applications such as health care and
medical; accounting; engineering & technical; special education
SALES & MARKETING
Sales presentation; point-of-purchase kiosk; product demonstration;
advertisement; product information, corporate image, customer relations
INTERACTIVE CONSUMER HOME PRODUCT
Children's games; adult's games; children's enrichment; adult's
enrichment; consumer information (health, legal, etc.); home education
products
CORPORATE APPLICATION
Training (professional), training (technical); presentation, internal
communications, legal; business management; communications;
personal/professional development; employee relations, motivational,
orientation, security/ safety, job skills
ENTERTAINMENT
Location-based entertainment, simulation; graphics; special effects;
programming design; all performance applications
INFORMATION
Interactive encyclopedia, data bank applications; information applications
VIRTUAL REALITY
Experiences that place the users senses within a computer generated world
DESIGN
Interface design; immersion, participation and exit from technology;
booth/kiosk display design
HARDWARE
Corporate advancements in new technology

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE
Unique, innovative, creative technological excellence which affects the
senses and evokes an emotional response
CREATIVE EXCELLENCE
Story/script; production design; programming; motion/still imagery;
animation/graphics; audio/ soundtrack; interface design; skill augmentation
BEST OF SHOW
The overall best taken from all submissions, from all categories.
VISIONARY
The visionary award will be presented to an individual in recognition
of lifetime achievement. This award is presented when deemed
appropriate.

How to Enter:
1. Complete, sign and return the Digital Media Awards entry form. A
separate form must accompany EACH entry.
2. A jury version of your work on 1/2S VHS or 3/4S U-Matic
videocassette in lo-band PAL or NTSC standard, or in storyboard form.
These materials should demonstrate the aesthetic as well as the
technical aspects of the production.
3. Supporting Documentation (typewritten, in English)
% A 200 word abstract
% A full description of the submission, from 1,000 to 1,500 words.
The description should include documentation of project history,
potential future impact, and how the project is related to its
respective category.
% A brief description of how attendees can experience your
exhibit, including capacity (people per hour), and projected
experience.
% A complete list of the creative team members.
4. All submissions must be labeled in English with the person's
name, affiliation, address, telephone number, title of piece and run
time. If a video contains more than one entry, individual entries must
be separated by colour bars and 10 seconds of black. ORIGINALS NOT
RETURNED.
5. Five original 35mm slides or transparencies of your work (or
five in stereo pairs, labeled left and right) must be included. In
English indicate TOP/FRONT and print your name, telephone number on the
slide mounts. Images may be the same or different. Slides and
transparencies will not be returned.
6. Productions in any language, from any nation are acceptable for
entry. Non-English productions will compete in the same categories as
English language productions.
Productions not produced in the English language must have either:
% Sub-titles or over-dubbing in English; or
% Script or detailed synopsis in English.
7. No entry submission can be longer than 3 minutes in length.
Entry Fee:
The entry fee is $130.00 Cdn or $100.00 U.S. funds per entry. Payment
of fees must accompany all entries. One cheque for the entries should
be submitted for multiple entries. International payments may be made
by an international money order. All fees are payable to: Canadian
Academy of Multimedia Arts & Sciences (CAMAS), VISA and Mastercard are
accepted, and will be processed in Canadian dollars.
All Entrants:
All entrants will receive registration to MULTIMEDIA*94, and admission
to the 1994 Digital Media Awards.
Disposition:
Entries and materials submitted will not be returned and may be
displayed, shown, duplicated, published or disposed of as CAMAS deems
appropriate. By entering, entrant agrees to hold CAMAS harmless for
any cost or expenses of any claim arising out of any such use by CAMAS
or its assigns.
Award Show:
Prize winners & finalists in all categories will be showcased at
Digital Media Awards on May 27, 1994 at the Ryerson Theatre in
Toronto. This event is co- hosted by MULTIMEDIA*94.
Finalists:
Finalists who qualify for consideration for a Digital Media Award will
be contacted via phone by May 15, 1994. Finalists who qualify for
consideration for awards will be requested to demonstrate their
projects in the original systems and formats. Finalists are
responsible for providing the equipment necessary to demonstrate, but
Digital Media Awards will make every effort to solicit the cooperation
of manufacturers and other hardware sources to cooperate in providing
equipment.
Deadlines:
The deadline for the 1994 competition is April 5, 1994. It is
important that your entry forms, fees, and video materials be received
in the Awards office by the deadline date. The Awards office reserves
the right to disqualify entries not meeting specifications, without any
refund. Any entries received after the deadline will not be accepted.
